Starlight Theatre will light up when American rock favorites STYX and Joan Jett take the stage for their 2018 summer tour on Tuesday, July 10.
Formed in Chicago in 1972, STYX rose to rock music fame with mega-hit albums throughout the 1970s and early ‘80s. Current band members Tommy Shaw, James Young, Lawrence Gowan, Todd Sucherman and Ricky Phillips, along with occasional appearances by original bassist Chuck Panozzo, have performed live shows together since 1999.
In June 2017, STYX released their 16th studio album and first since 2005. The album, The Mission, chronicles the first manned mission to Mars in the year 2033. With sweeping power ballads, 16 concept albums and Pollstar chart-toppers, the two-time Super Bowl performers will take the Starlight stage for the first time since June 2014. They are ready to again perform many of rock ‘n’ roll’s most-enduring anthems for Kansas City fans.
Joining STYX on tour is acclaimed singer-songwriter Joan Jett. While still in her early teens, Jett was often called “the girl Elvis.” She founded the seminal all-girl rock group, The Runaways, in 1975 and went on to record such hits as “Cherry Bomb” and “Heartbeat.” Jett became the first woman to own her own label, Blackheart Records.
Her next group, Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, became a staple of the Top 10 charts in the 1980s and still lays claim to the No. 28 song of all time, “I Love Rock n’ Roll.” Jett’s cover of The Arrows’ hit held the No. 1 spot on the Billboard charts for two months in 1981 – after 23 major record labels had refused to give her a deal. Joan Jett and the Blackhearts were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2015.
